Southeast Asian LGBTQ+ Research Network

Our Story

In December 2024, a few of the core group members attended the Southeast Asian Indigenous Psychology (SEAIP) conference and connected during a cluster networking session, where we shared our interest in LGBTQ+ psychology. We were fortunate to receive a SEAIP grant to undertake a project that centres on collectively envisioning our future as SEA scholars and mobilising transformative actions to advance LGBTQ+ research in the region. As part of the project, we launched the inaugural Southeast Asian LGBTQ+ Research Symposium in July 2025.

Goals

Note that while we use “Southeast Asian” as an umbrella term to foster solidarity among our members in addressing shared challenges, we recognise the uniqueness of each country’s sociocultural context. We do not intend to amalgamate these differences—at the societal, cultural, community, and individual levels—while also remaining mindful of classism, genderism, racism, ableism, and other oppressive forces that intersect with cis/heteronormativity. We seek to embrace these differences through honest, sometimes difficult, conversations.

1. Provide a platform for communication, connection, and collaboration to work towards SEA LGBTQ+ equity

2. Centre SEA LGBTQ+ needs and voices, and advocate for community struggles

3. Disrupt the hegemony of LGBTQ+ scholarship and research by amplifying SEA philosophies, ontologies, epistemologies, and sociopolitical and cultural contexts

4. Work relationally and constructively with local and international organisations and groups to support SEA LGBTQ+ equity

5. Respond to identified challenges and priorities for research and intervention through our SEAIP-funded project
